After almost 1 year of absence from the Aegean habitat, I thought it was time for me to explore another portion of that mythical universe... I set my eyes on the Cyclades, or at least part of them, for I know that my unquenchable thirst for knowledge, new lands and peoples will force me to return to these seas... Always in search for more, pursuing a life on the road and the determination to avoid routine and boredom: at any cost. Palermo was the starting point of my Aegean quest: the direct flight took me to the acclaimed Santorini; out of sheer curiosity awakened by a reputed paradise, unfortunately much too popular and much too populated... South-Eastern Anatolia: GAZIANTEP Typical Turkish tea glass in front of me, a small plate of kadayıf to my left, my friend to my right and the spacious pastry shop brimming with people and energetic chatter all around us... I believe in Antep one truly understands the meaning of "synesthesia" - different perceptions combined to form an homogeneous and fascinating whole I deliberately sunk in: from the Selçuk fortress (11th-12th century) to the mosaics of the ancient Zeugma, from the former kervansaray to the covered market all colors and aromas. Luptele pentru tron de la Istanbul: O nouă cădere a Constantinopolului? Ori soarta este mereu de partea lui Erdoğan, ori este altceva la mijloc… eram în Asia când am citit cu stupoare că Istanbulul i-a scăpat printre degete, ca prin minune, AKP-ului - mi-am spus: oare Erdoğan nu se pregătește deja pentru represalii? După mai mult de o decadă la cârma Constantinopolului, cu siguranță nu este dispus să accepte cu una, cu două victoria partidului de opoziție, kemalist de formație, CHP, și al celui pe care îi consideră deja dușman de moarte: Ekrem İmamoğlu, ales primar general acum 2 săptămâni. Sindromul Italia - consecințele unui sacrificiu matern Cunoaștem cu toții poveștile protagonizate sau poate chiar pe unele dintre protagonistele cazurilor de migrație economică în Italia - și spun protagoniste pentru că mă refer la doamnele de vârsta a doua care, în special în Iași și în zona Moldovei, nu au avut posibilitatea de a se reprofila profesional după vârsta de 40, văzându-se obligate să-și caute surse de venit departe de casă... Fabrica, întreprinderea, combinatul (ca întreaga zona industrială din Iași) ca posibil angajator dăduse probabil faliment până prin 2000, iar gama joburilor disponibile pentru această categorie de vârstă frizau absurdul prin absență - în acest context, ideea de a îngriji un bătrân sau un copil într-o țară în care aceste servicii se plăteau de 3-4 ori mai bine decât o normă întreagă era o alternativă extrem de ispititoare pentru multe românce… Am cunoscut personal astfel de cazuri - multe dintre femeile ce acceptau un astfel de job...

Trăiesc în Germania. De multă vreme. Citesc presa locală și internațională. În fiecare zi: în română, engleză, spaniolă, italiană și evident, în germană. Iar astăzi, când am deschis obișnuita pagină de știri, dat fiind că una din temele pe care le urmăresc în presa germană este și România, mi-au apărut în fața ochilor două articole ale unor ziare extrem de importante la nivel național și internațional: Die Welt și FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Titlurile erau: “De 3 ori mai mulți români și bulgari beneficiari de Hartz IV”; iar subtitlurile erau  caracterizate de aceeași concizie dezarmantă: “150.000 de români și bulgari rezidenți în Germania beneficiază lunar de ajutor social. De 3 ori mai mulți decât în 2013” (Este vorba de în jur de 425 € fără chirie și încălzire, cheltuieli acoperite de către stat).  Stupoare. Și, cu siguranță, nemulțumire în rândul multor  cititori germani fără așa-numitul “Migrationshintergrund” ori în traducere liberă, origini ...

Away from the maddening city... Siem Reap & Angkor An actual explosion... all my senses alive again... the heat in Siem Reap, the vegetation, the jungle that was part of the city was just mind blowing... I suddenly felt I just belonged there, in that tropical world, far away from all that Europe entails: the speed, the stress, the opportunism, the craving for utterly useless things - consumerism... all that past Europe carries is sometimes a burden... here, in South East Asia, I have the feeling the world has just been born... my arrival in Cambodia felt like starting over... IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME… North Vietnam Even if in Western Europe I'm still regarded as a total stranger sometimes (especially when I mention my country of origin, Romania), in Southeast Asia I encountered no prejudice whatsoever - quite the opposite: people there made me feel welcome right away. The official reason for my voyage was a dear Cambodian friend I met years ago in Los Angeles. But why just go to Phnom Penh when I could tour several Asian countries? Always in search of new challenges, I thus decided to extend my Asian trip to 3 weeks and first go to Bangkok, dying to finally experience the famous/infamous metropolis. However, to make sure the itinerary would be highly original, I’d soon leave Bangkok for Hanoi, eager to meet my friend's friend and get to know North Vietnam. What I recall upon my arrival in Hanoi... my surprise at the kindness and politeness of the people - from the bus driver to the hotel staff. Even my passport was looked at with utmo...
